HID stands for high-intensitydischarge, which is a term that refers to the electric arc that produces light. The high intensity is produced by metallic salts vaporizing within the arc chamber. HID lights produce a given beam pattern that is larger in size. The history of Xenon lights started with BMW in 1991 which used an unshielded, non-replaceable burner and AC ballast on their 7 series. But have since gone on to be heavily used by the offroad vehicle manufacturers.
